This piece was inspired by DJ Moyma. I met him while he was visiting NYC in the fall and winter of 2013. He’s a DJ, producer, visual artist, graffiti artist, he writes music, and he teaches what he practices. Seriously. He’s taught at schools as well as prisons. Here’s a great article that talks about some of his accomplishments.
He has become an incredible friend in a short period of time and his friendship has encouraged intellectual, artistic, emotional and spiritual growth, exactly when I needed it the most. He’s an incredible talent and extremely humble and I am honored that he’s taken the time to teach and guide me.
This is my first experiment with graf art and I’m still ‘toy’ with regards to the graf .. but it’s the first time I drew a face so well so I’m pretty proud of that. This is quite a personal accomplishment for a myriad of reasons.
The title — Energy Follows Thought — He places great time and effort into his thought process .. once he has thoroughly analyzed his endeavors, he expels great energy into them .. to produce great work.
His name.. MOYMA .. When we hung out, we soundly pounded the pavements of NYC … with its majestic buildings always surrounding us. It was only natural for me to use block letters for his name, because it reminds me of the buildings and thus, our time together.
The cracks… when he was scratching, it was very intense .. when he draws .. he expels so much mental energy into his art .. it’s like a sonic boom that creates cracks in the surfaces surrounding him.
The ‘Y’ is a hand making a peace sign cos it’s that thing he does when people snap his pic :)
Honor, respect, and friendship are what he lives and breathes.. they are in every breath he lets out …
He’s extremely generous with sharing knowledge and showing love.. he makes it quite easy to love him in return. The arrows represent the outward flow of his generosity of knowledge and love.
He exudes authenticity, staying true to self .. these are just some of the qualities that flow from him (thus, more arrows).. and serve to remind me that I shouldn’t waiver in my conviction of the same.
'Real hip hop, can't let 'em steal hip hop' (from a song in one of his mixes) I think this statement represents him well because he reps real hip hip .. hardbody.
He resurrected my strength through his strength of character. When I was at my worst feeling of loss, he reminded me how strong I could be .. just by being my friend.
The open arrows represent his open arms of kindness to me. He’s an extremely kind person, with a big heart. As well, lines of communication were and are always open with him. Any problems that we’ve had, he talks and works them out .. he’s open with me, doesn’t play mind games. All of which I’m very grateful.
Art, creativity, and genuineness (taken from one of his mixes) … he wears these qualities around his neck like a delicate chain that’s never removed.. it is just a part of who he is .. naturally.
'There's consequences in being yourself' .. (also taken from one of his mixes). There are those who can’t seem to handle who he is and all that he’s accomplished, and so he suffers the consequences of their jealousy and egos.
The clock represents the time I hope to continue to spend with him.
Here are links to DJ Moyma’s mixes .. you can download them for free from iTunes .. he’s truly sick on the 1s and 2s - if you like real hiphop, funk, EDM, drum & bass, download his stuff .. it’s the wildest ride of sweet listening pleasure with a climax into the smoothest orgasm your mind can imagine.
